Barcelona is one of the top visitor destinations in Europe and a hugely colorful, energetic and stylish city. It's confident and tireless and its people know how to live, whether that's dancing 'til the small hours at a nightclub, enjoying a long harborside dinner, or relaxing on the city-beach, they take the 'work hard, play hard' mantra seriously. Visitors will be impressed by the size and variety of cultural sights, attractions and events on offer. The best Barcelona hotel will easily match the leading world hotels in luxury, style and facilities and make a comfortable base for exploring this intoxicating city.

Barcelona is characterized strongly by cultural events and economic advancement. It boasts glorious Art Nouveau buildings which gleam in the sun and can be viewed from any of the tourist buses. The work of Gaudi is strongly evident in its architecture. The city's artistic legacy is hugely strong and there are a number of galleries displaying works by Antoni Tapies and Joan Miro, as well as a superb Picasso museum. The old town has the most sights of cultural and historic interest. It's just 20 minutes or so by foot from the central central Placa de Catalunyaand has much to draw visitors in, including the Gaudi buildings, the famous markets, the impressive Gothic cathedral and a feast of museums and galleries. It's also a good spot for exploring attractions beyond the city center and the city's fast and efficient metro system helps make that easy to do.

Of course the most famous part of the old town is the long and winding pedestrian street of the Ramblas. The name derives from the arabic for 'sand' and this refers to the stream that once flowed along it. Perhaps the first place that tourists head to, the Ramblas is nearly a mile long and gorgeously tree lined. It also effectively splits the old part of town into two, with the Gothic, labyrinthine streets of Barri Gotic to the east and the artistic, edgy district of El Raval to the West. The Ramblas is an incredible sight. It's lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, kiosks and tourist shops and its pavements throng with buskers, locals, performing artists, visitors and workers. Visitors can buy souvenirs, pets, postcards, sunglasses, have their future divined or portrait painted, or lose money with the famous dice and card sharps who set up shop here.

At the end of the Ramblas is the smart harbor and city waterfront area, also known as Port Vell. It's a good place to walk and explore the restaurant and fishing quarter of Barcelona, the city's sandy beaches and the city park. There's also a fine promenade to wander along in the sun, enjoying cafes and restaurants toward Port Olimpic.

There are plenty of other attractions to visit as well. The national art museum is a great place to see grand Gothic and Roman art (whilst sheltering in the cool, towering building during the hottest part of the day!). The Opera House is a fantastic venue for a night time show and those who enjoy a physical challenge may enjoy scaling the heights of Tibidabo, with gorgeous views and an amusement park awaiting the victors! There's a cable car which travels along the harbor, providing a more relaxing way of seeing the city and for those who love panoramic views, the ramparts of the Castell offer a birds-eye vista of Barcelona.

Getting to and around the city is simple from Barcelona airport. A number of budget airlines travel here from regional UK airports and it's an extremely well set-up and connected airport for onward travel. Onward airport buses and taxis are immediately located outside each of the main three adjacent terminals and there is a train station just a short transfer away. In most cases, it's possible to get from the airport to the hostel, budget backpacker B&B or best Barcelona hotel in around an hour.

When booking a place to stay in Barcelona, the choice is huge. Business visitors tend to stay in the large accommodations in the commercial centers or on the primary road or travel networks around Barcelona. Visitors and tourists will find something to suit every budget. There are a mass of inexpensive and comfortable hostels and budget hotels, as well as luxury and famous four and five star hotels within the city center, offering spas, gyms, leisure services, gorgeous decor and fine dining. Booking online tends to be best Barcelona hotel and hostel rooms tend to book up quickly in peak times of year, but the best prices will still be found online.
